Unity just announced undergoing their largest layoff yet, cutting about 1,800 jobs, which is a quarter of their workforce. This move is part of a broader “reset” aimed at refocusing on core business areas.

This isn’t the first challenge Unity has faced recently. Last year, they proposed changes to their pricing model, which would have significantly impacted developers, especially those working on free-to-play titles. The backlash was swift and loud, leading to a quick retraction of these plans.

Following this controversy and the departure of their then-CEO John Riccitiello, interim CEO Jim Whitehurst stepped in. Under his leadership, Unity is looking to streamline and strengthen its long-term profitability, but it’s a path marked by tough decisions, including these layoffs.

This is part of a larger trend in the gaming industry, which saw tremendous number of jobs lost in 2023. It’s a reminder of the volatile nature of this sector and the challenges companies face in adapting to rapidly changing market conditions.

Wishing the best for all those affected during these transitions 🙏

Tough times for Unity and the gaming industry, but here’s hoping for a stronger future. 🎮🌱
